Singer Ashley Suppa is feeling all the pressures of a relationship and whatever life is throwing at her. She doesn’t want to be a hassle to her boyfriend or her friends – but in her new song “Trouble” it’s nearly impossible to not be ensconced by her delicious pop harmonies. This addictive song is so summer ready it could give the sun a tip or two on how to make rays. With a guitar riff and oozing bass line that would make Nile Rodgers jealous, “Trouble” is a summer pop song for the ages. Proving that all the chaos in her life is just in her imagination, but the song’s end, Suppa has her listeners believing that all the trouble in “Trouble” was worth it from the start.

Suppa, who notes David Bowie, Lady Gaga, The 1975, Tyler the Creator, Dua Lipa and Bruno Mars as her influences, bridges the gap between dance, pop and electronica. It’s not that her synth lines are not unique, but I found myself mostly enamored with the song’s rhythm section, laced with broad beats. The New York City-artist is a student of music. Still a teenager (Suppa is 18) you hear a spry bounce in her vocals, and even in the diluged sonic splash, she cuts through keenly like a seasoned music veteran. Within her melodic voice is indeed the influence of Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa and maybe hints of Ariana Grande. She truly maneuvers the song to her own, evolving within the song to a confident singer.
This song has many twists and turns, and as a listener, it keeps those shoulders and hips shaking. My foot was tapping, too. Suppa has moments where she glides right into the backing music, like her vocals and the music undertow fold into one. It’s that brash moment, a stark reminder that while pop music might not move us lyrically, it can move mountains emotionally with a few beats and a churning tempo. “Trouble” has a contagious vibe, a chorus that affixes itself into the listener’s day. I think what I witnessed in this song is an example of a vital and vibrant artist. In her song, she’s singing about trying to figure it out and balancing all that she can and not be too much for her loved ones. What she may have discovered, in writing this song, is that Suppa has it way more figured out than she thinks. We’re all feeling like we’re just floating off and space and feeling low, as Suppa sings. I love how she hits several universal feelings in “Trouble”.

So where does “Trouble” land on my radar? Pretty high. Suppa has redeemed my love for the pop music genre – just when I thought it was the same old, same old, she goes and stirs up trouble. The song has a lot of computerized sound, but in some crazy way, Suppa makes it sound like a live band is performing with her. That’s a magic that you just can’t fake.
